Topics: Types of Weather
How is Weather Predicted?
Vocabulary:
weather-the condition of the atmosphere at a given place and time
air temperature-how warm or cool the air is around us
humidity-the amount of water vapor in the air
air pressure-the weight of the atmosphere pressing down on Earth's surface
barometer-a weather instrument used to measure changes in air pressure
wind-the movement of air
anemometer-a weather instrument used to measure wind speed
weather vane-a weather instrument used to tell the direction of the wind
cirrus clouds-thin, streaky clouds made of ice crystals; common during cool, fair weather
cumulus clouds-thick, puffy, white clouds; common on hot, sunny days; can develop into storm clouds
stratus clouds-low, gray clouds that can produce rain or snow; dark, gloomy weather
precipitation-water that falls to Earth's surface; rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc.
rain gauge-a weather tool used to measure the amount of rainfall
air mass-a large body of air with the same temperature and humidity throughout
front-the boundary between two air masses
meteorologist-a scientist who studies weather
weather forecast-a prediction about the future weather conditions of a place
-These are the last 2 sections in our Weather chapter.
-Weather Chapter Test-tentatively next Wednesday, Oct. 18th.
-Materials to review will be coming home next Monday.

Topic: The Water Cycle
Vocabulary:
water cycle-the process through which water moves between Earth's surface and the atmosphere
evaporation-the change from a liquid to a gas
water vapor-water in its gas form
atmosphere-the mixture of gases that surrounds the earth
transpiration-the process through which water exits plants' leaves
condensation-the change from a gas to a liquid
dew-water droplets that form on objects near the ground
fog-a cloud that forms near the ground
precipitation-water that falls from clouds to earth's surface, such as rain, snow, and hail
groundwater-water that is stored under the ground
runoff-water that does not soak into the earth's surface, but flows across the earth's surface
glacier-a large, slow-moving mass of ice
aquifer-a body of rock that stores groundwater

Topic: What is Technology?
-A tool is anything that helps people shape, build, or produce things to meet their needs.
-Technology is any designed system, product, or process that people use to solve problems.
-A technology product is anything designed to meet a need or desire.
-A technology process is a series of steps used to achieve a goal or make a product.
-A designed system is made up of tools, parts, and processes that work together.
Parts of a Designed System
-Goal--what the system aims to do
-Input--what is put into the system to meet the goal
-Processes--describe how the goal is to be achieved
-Output--the end product
-Feedback--information that tells whether or not the output is successful.
Test Date: Tuesday, Sept. 26th

Topics: What is Engineering?
What is the Design Process?
-Engineering is the use of scientific and mathematical principles to develop something practical.
-Design means to conceive something and prepare the plans and drawings for it to be built.
-A prototype is an original or test model on which a real product is based. If the prototype works, then the real product is made. If the prototype does not work, improvements have to be made. Then the prototype can be tested again.
