Sept. 18th-22nd
Topics: Comparing and Ordering Numbers
Rounding
Rules for Rounding (We thought of a king to help us out!)
-Underline the digit in the place value you are rounding to. (This number is the king.)
-Check the digit to the right. (This is the king's right-hand man.)
-If the right-hand man is 0-4, he's wimpy. He can't move the king. The king stays the same.
-If the right-hand man is 5-9, he's strong. He can move the king up. The king increases by one. All the other digits to the right of the king turn to zero.
Ex: Round 25,459 to the nearest ten-thousand.
25,459 2 is the king. 5 is the right-hand man. 5 means the right-hand man is strong and can move the king up to a 3. So 25,459 rounds up to 30,000.
